Festival Center and Outposts
Four locations spread throughout the city tie the festival together.
“We all want to talk about borders / and still travel across borders with every word [...]" – Ingeborg Bachmann
In its second year, the Berlin Performing Arts Festival is still as spread out as it was in its first year. The artists of Berlin’s independent performing arts community are presenting their work in nearly sixty different locations. This means that the festival moves from one space to the next: in response to widespread demand, there is a festival center for the 2017 Berlin Performing Arts Festival. PAF will find a temporary home for six days in Alte Münze, in the heart of Berlin.
Here, visitors from Berlin and the rest of the world can stop by and meet in one of the many corners of the center: they can share a drink at the festival‘s bar, Verfüg-Bar, soak up some sun and enjoy coffee in the garden or in Galerie der Überfülle or the Gallery of Abundance, where visitors can get visual or acoustic impressions of the festival - either alone or with others during the pop quiz. The Lecture Lounge is full of offers for visiting industry professionals and Berlin Diagonale Show Camp will also open its doors here. Once every evening, artists will take the stage, Off-Stage, and read, sing and perform in a small-scale, excellent late night schedule of programming. After this, everyone can join together on the Diversity Dance Floor to welcome the morning sun.
The festival center, however, does not stand alone – it has already been pluralized: three outposts also open their gates in three additional districts: aquarium at Kottbusser Tor, Platzhaus on Helmholtzplatz in Prenzlauer Berg and Allmende-Kontor, a community gardening project on Tempelhofer Feld.

These spaces are open to visitors during the day at the hubs in Kreuzberg, Prenzlauer Berg and Neukölln There, they can be informed by the festival staff about what can be seen in the respective neighborhoods during the festival. In addition, they can also simply enjoy the atmosphere there, sit back and speak to each other: about performance, Berlin, changes, constants, niches, places, restrictions and openings.
Together, the festival center and its outposts demonstrate that the festival, like Berlin, is not a hermetically sealed container; not even a whole bunch of small hermetically sealed containers. The spaces overlap and in one place the others can be just as palpable, visible and audible. Taking these thoughts as a point of departure, Philine Rinnert, scenographer and director, has created a space of fictions that extends over the real locations, Alte Münze, Aquarium, Platzhaus and Allmende-Kontor and spreads itself amongst them. This space itself is mixture of theatrical and natural spaces. As if it were unaware of the borders between them. Or as if did not want to accept them. Or: as if these borders themselves were independent spaces once again and at the same time the blurring of this independence. That is: how to speak about borders?
