…New For and In Berlin: Nine Artists Within the Independent Performing Arts Community

Since the founding of the Berlin Performing Arts Festival the combination of Hebbel am Ufer, Sophiensæle, Ballhaus Ost and Theaterdiscounter have presented exciting new artists in and for Berlin. Together, the artistic staff of the institutions selected nine emerging artists from 99 applications and will present them in their schedule of programming for the festival as the series INTRODUCING.

In doing so, acquaintanceships are made on a variety of levels: artists introduce themselves to a local independent performing arts community, artists present themselves to a new audience, artists encounter the profiles and structure of Berlin’s production institutions and the artists mutually get to know each other. Most of all, however, they introduce themselves to the Berlin audience and get ready for their first date – with all of the accompanying butterflies in the stomach and exciting curiosity about the unknown.

This year, the extroverts among us can look forward to a very diverse palette of encounters. All nine positions deal for themselves with the question of the stage and whom it belongs to as aesthetic manifestos and open experimental systems at the same time. Trusting in the power of encounters at eye level, we set off with INTRODUCING on a dating marathon with a guarantee that you’ll see these artists again. Nine exciting positions on the performing arts, all of which are worth beginning a long-term partnership with.

In addition, we are very pleased to announce that the mentors from the Performing Arts Program will their expertise about working in Berlin’s independent performing arts community with the newcomers – we all started out like this at one point! Over the course of a save space breakfast as a confidential dialogue, they will speak the day after the performance about potentials, networking and questions regarding Berlin’s independent performing arts community. This may take place behind closed doors, but it will certainly not take place with closed eyes. We are very pleased about this encounter with the “Introducers” and, with that, say thank you to: Silvia Albarella, Anna Bergel, Annett Hardegen, Eva Hartmann, Ludger Orlok, Juli Reinartz, Arne Vogelgesang, Christoph Winkler and Albrecht Ziepert.

This all adds up to something that will also be further connected in the form of brief public encounters as well as an internal exchange program with the mentors of LAFT Berlin and strengthen the network that makes Berlin’s independent performing arts community so rich.
