The 2019 Newcomer’s Platform Introducing…

Each year, the Berlin Performing Arts Festival presents works created within the city and the artistic positions of the independent performing arts community in a shared festival. With Introducing…, PAF, together with the four cooperating performance venues Ballhaus Ost, HAU Hebbel am Ufer, Sophiensæle and Theaterdiscounter, provide a schedule of programming with a focus on artists who are newcomers to Berlin.  The goal is to provide space for promising artists, artist groups and collectives and their first new productions for the community in which presentation, discussion and reflection are possible. This serves both as an “introduction” to Berlin’s independent performing arts community as well as to “introduce” Berlin to new positions.

Submission deadline ist January 15, 2019.

Open Call

The productions presented within the Newcomer’s Platform will be selected by the artistic leadership of the initiating performance venues together with the director of the festival on the basis of an open call and the selected productions will each be performed once at one of the venues over the course of four days of the festival. When making the selection, care will be taken to achieve a balance which reflects society as a whole.

Introducing… works together with the PAP Mentoring Program, allowing each artist or group selected for the platform to enter into a content-based exchange with an established member of Berlin’s independent performing arts community during the festival. Alongside this and additional involvement throughout the festival’s entire schedule of programming, Introducing… stands for exchange and networking. With Berlin. With performance venues. With artists. Among each other. This is why all participants in the platform are required to participate in all five days of the festival.

Special inclusion within the PR work of the festival is a core component of the invitation to participate in the platform.

Participation

The Newcomer’s Platform searches for promising artists, artist groups and collectives whose work is based in Berlin or will be based in Berlin, who work professionally but who are not yet professionally established in Berlin’s independent performing arts community and who define themselves as “newcomers” in the broadest sense. They should already have made their first connections within Berlin’s independent performing arts community. Only finished productions that have already been presented may be submitted; we do not accept any work-in-progress! Minimum length: 20 minutes.

The selected productions will be presented between May 28 and June 2, 2019 at one of the four cooperating performance venues. The performance venues provide space as well as technical support (subject to precise coordination) for the productions. Performance fees for the participants will be paid from the funding received for the festival. The development of new productions, however, cannot be financed. All productions selected will also receive dramaturgical support from the festival both before and during the festival.
