On Drawing (Ana Mendes)

"On Drawing" is a performance/lecture that explores the connections between drawing and thinking in the realms of arts and science. It is based on Mendes' video "On Drawing", filmed with Mina Pegourie, a Moroccan woman who cannot read or write, thus she uses drawing as a tool for everyday life. The performance "On Drawing" marks the opening of the programme that runs at Ausland, from 15th to the 18th of June. In the opening night, Mendes will perform with other invited guest/artists. The guests of the Performing Arts Festival Berlin may opt to see Mendes' performance of the whole night programme, which runs from 18h00 to 20h00.

Ana Mendes studied animation film in France, photography at Bauhaus University, Weimar, Germany and Performance at Goldsmiths College, University of London, UK. Her performance career started accidentally when she wrote Self-portrait, a play on her identity. Her work has been exhibited at MAC, Belfast, Ireland; Defibrillator Gallery, Chicago, USA; Sophiensaele, Berlin, Germany; Peter Robertson Gallery, Alberta, Canada; Kunstraum Niedereosterreich, Vienna, Austria.
Selected prizes and fellowships include: MAC International Ulster Bank Prize, MAC, Ireland (finalist); Fellowship Akademie Solitude, Stuttgart, Germany, 2016/17, Writer in Residency City of Vienna 2014, Kulturkontakt Austria; Prize of the Jury Sophiensale, Festival 100º Berlin 2013; Foundation Calouste Gulbenkian Fellowship 2010.

ausland is an independent venue for music, film, literature, performance and other artistic endeavours. We also offer our infrastructure for artists and projects for rehearsals, recordings, and workshops, as well as a number of residencies.
Inaugurated in 2002, ausland is run by a collective of volunteers (= ausländers): Artists themselves and/or culture & DIY-enthusiasts from different backgrounds and countries. Our genre-spanning programme is curated through the individual initiative of ausländers or in cooperation with external partners in the independent arts scene or institutions in Berlin and from abroad.
