Foreign Body (Clébio Oliveira)
Performative and aesthetical challenges to our genderidentity have been internalized without us being questioned prior. We can hardly detract ourselves from the power of assigned roles. Any straying away from societal norms provokes reactions. But what happens when biological and societal gender do not match? Or if genderidentity is communicated outward by means of an exterior that deviates from the norm? How can the individual find his*her own role, when he*she is forced to constantly navigate this role in the context of society? Clébio Oliveira's "Foreign Body" creates its own semi-utopian space in which the category of gender is discovered by oneself. Other possibilities, that allow for discoveries beyond the binary gender structure, are explored and tested here.
