For this project Phil Collins collaborated with guests of GULLIVER survival station for the homeless located in the centre of Cologne. There he installed a phone booth with a free line. The recorded conservations were them rendered anonymous and sent to a variety of international musicians, including Scritti Politti, Julia Hummer and Planningtorock, serving as the starting point for original new songs. These are presented as 7” vinyl records in specially designed listening booths, bringing to the fore the lyrical and narrative potential of the human voice when it stands in for those subjects of city life who are purposefully ignored and routinely overlooked.

Since the 1990s the focus of Phil Collins’s diverse work has been the position of the individual and of the collective in our image-dominated society. Characteristic of his approach is a close engagement with place and communities. Works by Collins have been shown in museums, galleries, and at film festivals worldwide. His works can be found in public collections such as those of the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Tate Gallery in London. “This Unfortunate Thing Between Us – A Teleshopping Broadcast In Full Colour” (2011), “Tomorrow Is Always Too Long” (2015), “marxism today (prologue) / use! value! exchange!” (2015) and “my heart’s in my hand, and my hand is pierced, and my hand’s in the bag, and the bag is shut, and my heart is caught” (2015) have already been seen at HAU Hebbel am Ufer. He is Professor of Video Art and Performance at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne. Collins lives and works in Berlin.

With its three stages, HAU1, HAU2, and HAU3, HAU Hebbel am Ufer stands for current artistic positions at the interface of theatre, dance, and performance.
