Map Series (Ana Mendes)

Map Series is a performance in which Mendes considers her identity as a Portuguese citizen facing a post-colonial context. In this performance-installation, Mendes sits on a chair at a table with a sewing machine, stitching maps of the former colonies of the German Empire. As this occurs, a video camera simultaneously records and projects a live stream of the image of the sewing machine needle onto the wall/screen. Speakers also amplify the sounds emitted by the machine. The stitching begins at a regular pace, but builds to a non-stop, furious motion until it erases the surface of the paper map. After the performance, the map is displayed on the wall of the gallery/room as an installation with sound.

Ana Mendes studied animation film, at La Poudriere – Ecole du Film d’Animation, Valence, France (2008), photography at Bauhaus University, Weimar, Germany (2012), and finished an M. A. in Writing for Performance at Goldsmiths College, University of London, UK (2011).
Her performance career started accidentally when she wrote Self-portrait, a play on her identity, in 2010. Since then, she has been developing projects that play on the intersection of photography and performance. Her work has been exhibited at Defibrillator Gallery, Chicago, USA; Sophiensaele, Berlin, Germany; Peter Robertson Gallery, Alberta, Canada; The Barbican Centre, London, UK; Future MESS, Bosnia, Saravejo, Maison des Artes Georges Pompidou, Cajarc, France.
Mendes’ plays are translated into Bosnian, English, Spanish, Polish and French. » Errant Bodies

Errant Bodies opened its project space in 2010 in Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin. Since that time it has been dedicated to experimental work in sound, including performance, fieldwork, voice, radio and spatial practices. Through residencies, workshops, events and exhibitions, Errant Bodies Sound Art Space emphasizes an engagement with process and dialogue, encouraging a dynamic and diverse approach to the sound arts. As a project space, it also intends to foster social and public activities, contributing to the creative scene in Berlin and its artistic communities. Starting in 2013, the project space is managed and developed through a working group comprised of artists, researchers, curators, and writers focusing on sonic research and sound practices. The working group develops initiatives and an experimental program of presentations, events and exhibitions.
