Ibsen: Peer Gynt (Markus & Markus)

Peer Gynt is an exceptionally talented dancer, womanizer and pilot. He knows how to handle a machine gun. However, the button-molder wants to melt his soul just like a misshaped lead figure. He can only escape this fate if he can prove that he was himself throughout his life. Peer has nine children, but he can’t be with them because a wall has been built between them. Peer Gynt has dementia. What is the ‘self’ exactly? And who exactly decides whose reality is valid?

The theater collective Markus&Markus from Hildesheim, Germany, has had a reputation for radical political theater since 2011. Through the confrontation of documentations of realty with the stage as an illusion machine, the group blurs the borders between staging and reality. The collective's productions have received awards - including an award from the Kapitalismusschredder (»Capitalism Shredder«) festival - and have been invited to numerous festivals.

The Sophiensæle is one of the most important locations for German-speaking independent art-production. Artists from Berlin, as well as the national and international theatre-scene are invited to produce and present their works here. They are selected on the basis of their artis-tic concepts, contents, and working schemes. The theatre is home to cultural discourse and a vast mix of artistic genres – from theatre, dance and music, to performance and visual art - which complement each other and enjoy a productive dialogue. Alongside many young artists searching for new theatrical languages and forms of expression, a number of established artists and companies have longstanding partnerships with the Sophiensæle.
