Proto-Manele Concert: A mix of electrified oriental pop and Romanian flavor, Konzertperformance. In the frame of PUBLIC SPEAKING. Video Performance Exhibition.

The concert performance by Raze de Soare is part of the exhibition and performance project PUBLIC SPEAKING developed by Xandra Popescu and Larisa at District. Drawing on their experiences as presidential candidates, rhetoric champions, tv stars, real estate speculators, punk cholos and pop philosophers, the initiators and participating artists developed a set of tools for the appropriation and subversion of public expression. The tensions between ideas of art for art’s sake and its potential to produce social change, which are staged in the exhibition, compose the setting for the musical intervention of Raze de Soare.

During the early ‘90s, a pseudo-industry of weddings emerged in Romania. Throughout the country, hundreds of bands developed the predilect sound of family events, which later became known as “proto-manele”, a mix of electrified oriental pop and local flavors. Raze de Soare’s EP Albatros is a tribute to the eponymous “proto-manele” band that pioneered the minimal synth sound of restaurant music.

With a focus on contextualizing artistic practice in urban space, District develops a collaborative and a multi-faceted program. Exploring different kinds of neighborhood and ways of dissolving boundaries, as well as emancipatory moments of amicability District creates occasions for opening up the present towards diverse perspectives and types of knowledge by means of art. Grounded in feminist, queer and decolonial approaches, District explores the curatorial as a performative as much as analytic practice and probes new kinds of community.
