Global Belly (Flinn Works)

A theater performance about transnational gestational surrogacy

Flinn Works has conducted research in five countries in order to gain a deeper understanding of gestational surrogacy. In an installation-performance, breezy agents meet content surrogates, arguing feminists encounter loving fathers-to-be. This performance shifts between borderless desire, finely balanced intimacy, heated debate and the cool logic of the market.

Flinn Works(Berlin/Kassel) has independently produced and presented more than 20 productions in a wide range of different venues and festivals. Always engaging with current social and political issues, the company devises its work in collaboration with professional artists and performers. Flinn Works has expanded its activities beyond Europe, with the input of writers, performers and musicians from other countries, including India, Bangladesh, Tanzania and Nigeria. Through the investigation of questions that resonate globally, performance, music and text are created with artists who work in different art forms and locations. The style of each production varies, as determined by the key artists and performers and their specific skills and experiences.

The Sophiensæle is one of the most important locations for the production of the independent arts in the German-speaking world. Artists from Berlin, as well as the national and international theater community are invited to produce and present their works here. They are selected on the basis of their artistic concepts, content and working methods. The theater is home to cultural discourse and a vast mix of artistic genres – from theater, dance and music to performance and visual art; which complement each other and enjoy a productive dialogue. Alongside many young artists searching for new theatrical languages and forms of expression, a number of established artists and companies have longstanding partnerships with the Sophiensæle.
